Damn I am trying to get a costume ready for con.

I didn't really want to spend much on this... but shit I just found the most awesome costume on Ebay...

http://cgi.ebay.com/Crimean-War-Era-British-Uniform-Shako-Coatee_W0QQitemZ220458296563QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item335456a4f3&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Damn it it even has the Shako, which with everything else I would have to buy it separately. And it is a real movie costume so not some cheap flimflam. But can I really pay $200 for it...

Shit I SOOOO did not need to find this. It make all the other options look like crap. And I was already feel like an ass for not making my own, but I know I'm not skilled enough to sew that kind of coat.

I mean this is like the best other option and it looks like utter tripe now.
http://www.costumes4less.com/Red-Coat-Costume_AC13152_Prod.aspx?utm_source=GoogleBase&utm_medium=cpc&utm_terms=ac13152 and it's just over $150

I had sorta been thinking of doing: this crappy one which is MUCH less expensive...

That really is an awesome coat! How much money do you normally spend at con, though? Maybe make it tight during con to get the coat you want now?

Well it's not actually fair to say what I usually spend on con as this is the first con where I have really had money to spare. I got my job in July of last year so i had a bit to play with by sept, but this year I've got a bit more squirreled away and my room is even cheaper.

I love how this isn't just the coat tho it's the whole outfit, shako, coat, and pants. The only things left that I would need are a white tunic shirt,Vampire teeth and the proper shako badge. The other nice thing is that with this I would have Another costume to add to my go to list. While I wouldn't want to wear it all the time I can definitely see Mal being a fun costume to keep doing year after year.

I suppose the only real worrisome bit would be if I ran into real financial trouble closer to con, but I have a badge already and a place to sleep so it's looking like I will be going no matter.

*sigh* You can tell I am trying to convince myself too, huh?

ok and out of curiosity You have any clue how I should take a jacket measurement, I tried to look it up online but it is just confusing me. I mean it's ok if the coat is a bit big as the scene in the book where they get their uniforms is mainly a kind of rummage stall, but... er yeah

That I am! And my opinion is this: If you feel comfortable financially, then go for it. Be happy, and have a good time doing it! In which hotel are you staying?

If I recall...

Should to should measured from the back.
Length
Shoulder to elbow, elbow to wrist (this makes sure you have moving room, instead of measuring the whole arm.)
Breast/Chest size
And if a long coat, then waist.

I think.

lol, sorry I kind of poorly worded my question. I was mainly trying to figure out what a size 40 jacket is and if it would fit relatively well. My guess is that is a chest circumference measurement, since if it is a purely lengthwise measurement we are talking about one REALLY large guy! I figure that I will probably bind for the costume as the character is in disguise so she could join the army. (Sorry dunno how much you know about the book.)

I'll be in the Hyatt. Kind of lucked into it really, but a touch nervous as I haven't actually met any of my roomies.

Well I know you've never technically met me either, but if you ever need a place to escape cause those roomies turn out crazy, let me know. We are over in the Marriott this year! Wewt!

A size 40 is "large" but not big if that makes sense. A standard male frame, I would say. I don't know your bust size, nor the source material (which book?), but taping down should always be considered an option! Then again, here is me saying that and I've no breasts to tape down, so who knows. I have done a lot of theatre and costuming, however.
