World Fair Trade! Promoting Global Economic Justice through Fair Trade
** Call to Action: Encourage Bruegger's to go 100% Fair Trade-Organic for their new coffee line
Dear Co-op America Member,
May 8th is World Fair Trade Day and this year we have a lot to celebrate. According to TransFair USA, in 2003, sales of Fair Trade Certified coffee jumped 91% from 2002. That takes the total additional income for farmers to $34 million since Fair Trade certification hit the US five years ago.
But there is still so much to be done. By working together, we can help grow the market for Fair Trade products and steer more revenue back to farmers and help strengthen communities throughout the developing world. In this email you'll find some great ideas for how you, your friends, and your family can promote Fair Trade in your community. Together, we are making a tremendous difference in the lives of farmers and artisans worldwide.
Fair Trade Action Ideas:
A. Co-op America and United Students for Fair Trade Call to Action: Ask Bruegger's to say 'Yes' to Fair Trade
Bruegger's, a nationwide operator of bagel bakeries, is conducting a trial to determine which coffee will be served at all of their 250 bakeries nationwide. Three roasters are competing for this contract, but Green Mountain Coffee Roasters is the only roaster offering 100 % Fair Trade Certified-Organic coffee to Bruegger's consumers. If Bruegger's adopts the Fair Trade-Organic line, it would become the first national chain to go 100% Fair Trade-Organic for all of their coffee sold by the cup. Plus, it will set a precedent that it is possible for restaurants, bakeries, and cafes to go 100% Fair Trade.
You can help Fair Trade win the coffee competition!
Here's what you can do to encourage Bruegger's to make history and switch to Fair Trade-Organic Coffee.
