Okay So I think I've figured out my normal 1040 right, but I'm nervous to go ahead and send it in for two reasons, and I'm curious if any of you bright folks on my friends list can help me out with this.

1. I paid at least $225 on a student loan during 2007. The problem is I don't know if this counts for the tax credit because the loan is in default. (due to a mix up with addresses and paperwork) I haven't recieved the peice of paper I expected to get that would tell me what I could claim. I'm not sure if it's just not here yet and I should hold up or if it's not coming and I should go ahead and file.

2. The tax rebate bill that just passed congress (http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080207/economy_stimulus.html)
Does this affect our refund or is this just something that will come later?

thanks if you can help.

As far as I know...
1. Call your loan people. They can tell you.
2. That's different. It's like that 300 bucks Georgie handed out a year or three ago.

I don't remember the $300 I probably missed it. so I shouldn't wait on the rebate stuff to be settled before filing?

The last one was either mailed out separately or tacked onto the federal tax return on their end, I can't remember which. I was in school and not working anywhere near enough to file, if at all, when that happened.

You could call the federal tax people and ask them, too. The info lines should be pretty empty because most people wait until the last damned minute.

you should be able to find the 1099 or (8), amount from your college loan on your account on the loan website. Or you can just call and ask. It's usually one of the pushbutton numbers on the list during tax season.
